“4K” appears on nearly every IPTV advert, usually next to a picture of a footballer. The reality is more limited, and knowing it saves you from paying extra for something you will never see.
Where does real 4K exist in the UK?
- Live sport. UK Sports and TNT Sports produce selected Premier League, Champions League and other events in Ultra HD.
- Big events. The BBC has shown events such as Wimbledon in Ultra HD on iPlayer.
- On demand. Many new films and series are mastered in 4K, and that is where a library carries them.
Ordinary channels, from BBC One to the news channels, broadcast in HD or standard definition.
What do you need to see it?
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Screen | A 4K (Ultra HD) TV |
| Device | A 4K-capable stick or box, such as Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max, Apple TV 4K, Nvidia Shield, or the TV’s own apps |
| Cable | An HDMI cable rated for 4K, plugged into a 4K-capable HDMI socket |
| Broadband | About 25 Mbps steady for each 4K stream |
| Wi-Fi | 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a network cable; 2.4 GHz often struggles |
Why does 4K buffer more?
A 4K stream carries roughly four times the detail of HD, so any weakness in Wi-Fi or broadband shows. If 4K stutters, try the HD version of the same channel; the picture difference on a TV under 50 inches is small.
