The TV licence confuses people who have switched from an aerial to streaming. The rule has not changed with the technology.
When do you need a licence?
| You watch… | Licence needed? |
|---|---|
| Any channel live, through an aerial, dish, cable or IPTV app | Yes |
| Live TV on a phone, laptop or tablet | Yes |
| BBC iPlayer, live or catch-up | Yes |
| Catch-up on ITVX, Channel 4 or My5 (not live) | No |
| Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video on demand | No |
| Films and series from an IPTV library, never live TV | No |
“Live” means as it is being broadcast, on any channel, from any country.
What does it cost?
£180 a year from 1 April 2026, payable in one go or in instalments. A black-and-white licence is £60.50.
What happens if you watch without one?
Watching or recording live TV without a licence is a criminal offence under the Communications Act 2003. The maximum fine is £1,000 plus costs.
Does a paid IPTV plan include the licence?
No subscription includes it, ours included. If your household watches any live channel through IPTV, it needs a licence as well.
