VLC is free, open source and on every computer. It is the quickest way to test a playlist.

VLC is maintained by VideoLAN, a non-profit, and plays almost any video format.

How do you open a playlist?

  1. Install VLC from videolan.org.
  2. Windows and Linux: Media → Open Network Stream. Mac: File → Open Network.
  3. Paste your M3U playlist URL and press Play.
  4. Open the playlist panel (Ctrl+L on Windows, Cmd+L on a Mac) and double-click a channel.

Can you save the channel list?

Yes: Media → Save Playlist to File. Next time, open that file instead of pasting the link. If your provider changes server, you will need the new link.

When should you use something else?

When you want a TV guide, favourites and catch-up every day. IPTV Smarters Pro has a desktop version for Windows and Mac that does all three.

Readers also ask

Why does VLC say 'Your input can't be opened'?
The link is wrong, the subscription has expired, or the server is refusing connections. Copy the link again without spaces, and test it in a browser: a working link starts downloading a file.
Can VLC show a TV guide for IPTV?
No. VLC plays the streams but does not show programme listings. Use IPTV Smarters Pro's desktop version if you want a guide on a computer.
Is VLC safe to download?
Yes, from videolan.org or your device's official app store. Avoid copies on download sites, which may bundle adware.
